Accelerating Literacy (AL) brings the strategies and theories behind balanced instruction together into a manageable and easily understood presentation. AL provides techniques for reading, writing, listening, and speaking instruction across the curriculum. The AL approach de-emphasizes  “pieces” and focuses more on putting the learning puzzle together. It addresses the more complex issues of identifying, coordinating, and assessing the important components in an instructional day. It is the best model available for creating a balanced instructional program. AL emphasizes balance in three areas:
   • curriculum (math, social studies, literature, science, etc.)
   • literacy (read-aloud, shared reading, guided process reading,
silent sustained reading, modeled writing, and guided
     process writing
   • processing (using semantics, syntax, and graphophonics or
whole-brain processing to construct meaning in the areas of
     reading, writing, listening, and speaking)
AL presents the necessary components of balanced instruction and is especially helpful in demonstrating how district grade-level text, literature, trade books, and the basal readers are put together to form a cohesive instructional program.
